The Jules Poiret mysteries are said to have been by Frank Howel Evans (1867-1932)

There is very little information about him around. There is an F Howel Evans in the 1881 census (age 14, a scholar at the Royal Naval School at Deptford, Kent.

Now that I've realised that he published his books as Howel Evans, I have found some at Abebooks.

And a search at the British Library does turn up his books in their catalogue. So he seems to be real.

As he died in 1932, his books are out of copyright in most of the world. In the US any of his works published before 1923 are in the public domain. The others are probably in the US public domain unless they were copyrighted in the US and that copyright renewed.
