I'm a newbie having just purchased a second-hand PW1. Firmware is 5.4.4.2 and the person from whom I purchased the device has apparently had it in Airplane mode since he got it.
I have set up Cailbre on my Mac, and already side-loaded some books onto the PW from Calibre. So far so good. However, the device has not yet registered and as such is missing some key functionality. So, I have several questions (please forgive all ignorance displayed).
1. From my initial reading, I'm unclear if Amazon latest firmware no longer permits side-loading of books, or is it just Amazon prohibits the use of third party software like Calibre to side-load books? I want to use alternate sources to Amazon for e-books.
2. It seems I must register the device to take advantage of several desired features. However, I was led to believe that if I enable wifi on the device, the firmware may automatically update. Is that correct? Obviously, I would like to avoid that as i think I will like/need to jailbreak the device to continue using Cailbre.
3. Finally, upon registering, I assume I can download Kindle desktop software in a directory in which I can extract the appropriate files to jailbreak?
