We are doing the format in the hope that if your sony has some bad memory sectors then the format will mark them as bad in the FAT.

Bernie! Thanks man. I got it working. I plugged it in to a Windows computer and went to the Disk Management tool. There, to my great surprise, it said the device was working properly. I checked into formatting it but that seemed to be okay too. There was a button on the formatting screen that said 'restore device to defaults' that I was VERY tempted to press but didn't.

What I figured was that since the device was working properly and I knew the "Books" folder was missing in the "Media" folder I'd try pasting a new "Books" folder into the "Media" folder. That did it.

I was able to copy and paste a new book in.
