George Lucas' tinkering with re-releases of the Star Wars movies is not something that just started happening with the "special" editions.

Star Wars initial 1977 released was in Dolby Stereo. A mono mix was released mere weeks later for exhibition in cinemas with no Dolby Stereo support. This mono version contains over 2 dozen changes to the audio including not only changes to sound effects but also changed dialog (for stormtroopers, 3PO and other "no lip movement" character and complete re-dubbing of some actors with a new voice.
