The serial number is in on the device. If you can access the data partition, it is in the file .kobo/version. It is the first thirteen characters. But, if you can't it, it is offset 0x200 in the image. As you will need to mount the card to write the replacement image, there should be a way to access that location. I'd probably just take an image of the card and look in that. The image I have sent has the serial number replaced with zeroes.
