During my working career, I have taught both young and old, “on site” and in the classroom. One of the things I had to keep in mind, was that which seemed elementary to me, was often not the case with the student. Sometimes I was amazed at an individual’s lack of common sense. That was, until I realised that this “common sense” wasn’t actually thus, but more a lack of understanding of primary principles in a topic that was, well, not common ground for most people.
Telling someone “its easy”, or asking “what’s so hard about it”, doesn’t really help I’m afraid. I know most people say these things out of frustration, when they themselves are able to breeze through a procedure as easily as swatting a fly, but cannot then understand why others may have a problem. But for those who are lacking, for whatever reason, in the basic underpinning knowledge required to get them to the starting point of where you might jump in with instruction, it isn’t so easy. Also, given that we are talking about actual programming here, if something did go awry, then where would that leave the novice?
I really appreciate that some of you have tried your best to help me with my conundrum, and I only wish I was more confident, and had a basic understanding of programming. I have a pretty full on program myself right of now, and don’t have the time to learn programming skills. Hopefully in the future I will give it a go, as I’m sure it isn’t totally beyond my abilities to learn the basics.
Thank you.
