Why is 220 volts the standard in Europe, while 110 volts is the standard in the U. S.? Does 220 volts offer an advantage over 110 volts?

Could it actually be the result of a different type of electric elves between the two areas of the world? Do higher voltage electric elves live in Europe? Would the answer be truly shocking?
