They are weird, as you can see. Incidentally, this is also why you should not hint you typefaces as if you are hinting for computer screen. And why most typefaces render weirdly.
I have to disagree. Hinting can look better on eInk especially at smaller sizes. I've hinted my modified version of Charis SIL and I've not seen anything odd.
