I thought the first item on the list was a Blank

Not in any 2.x windows version

The other types were complex or needed special treatment to not show (like numeric values and dates)

BTW if you edit in the Spreadsheet (main GUI), pressing F2 starts with the field highlighted. Just enter a space (in reality, a trailing space gets trimmed when storing, so no worry)
