I've never felt that I needed to see the Desktop while digging down in the Start Menu. I'll agree that the Start Menu was a bit of a jarring slap in the face in the old and "dead" Win8.0, but in 8.1 is can be much less so if setup correctly. The option for matching the background to the Desktop, the ability to use smaller icons, and the option to default to the All applications portion of the Start Screen environment improve the experience. Personally, I now have a slight preference for the Start Screen over the antique Menu.
