Really, Kobo is bizarre. The refer codes started during a contest and ended during a contest. I can't get even one 65% or 75% code at the current odds, but I had a virtually unlimited stream of 90% codes....
90% is such a game changer. With the 5% off from ebates.com, all but the most expensive books are reduced to a trivial sum. It's like getting the sack of books at the end of the library book sale, except that it's all stuff you really want.

Yeah, this Refer promo has been very interesting and quite delightful!!
There was some of the usual Kobo tension with trying to access a promo that ostensibly should have been easy - provide an email address of someone you want to refer Kobo to and receive a code back once that person used their code in a new account.
It didn't seem to work like that for everyone here, anyway. It seemed that not all people who were referred got code bearing emails; and then when referred people started new accounts and bought a book using the code, the system didn't auto generate a thank you 90% code back to the referrer (on most occasions it seems).
As to Kobo's intention behind this promo, perhaps they were solely after a greater membership base, and were hoping that word of mouth and the sending of emails would achieve this.
I can't imagine the cost, except to say I'm sure it wasn't a cheap exercise. A wonderful exercise for those of us able to get and use the 90% codes, but not cheap for Kobo.
Personally I would love to see this promo happen again!
