I used a used Kindle NT silver model before I recently purchased my Paperwhite. It worked great! I never had any issues with it. I imagine it was reliable because Amazon sold the silver non-touch Kindle back in 2011 and I just sold mine a couple of months ago. I'm loving my PW as well. I imagine that as long you keep your reader in a good case and treat it well, it should be fine and last a long while.
