What you are referring to is called paranormal romance. I consider those books trite and cliché personally. I don't think they represent sci-fi and fantasy genre in positive light. No offense to anyone that thinks those are the best books ever.
Amazon has a lot of those really low quality really bad self published titles, I agree.

Alternatively check out any of the 100+ lists with more particular criterions like sub genre lists and more.
I started reading fantasy few years ago and that site has made me fall in love with the genre with their awesome recommendations.
