I will try a factory reset and reinstallation when I get home and see if that fixes it. If not - my guess is I will have to send the device back.

Get a copy of the free "Notepad++" and use it to read and modify the script files. The "Advanced settings" are stored in the /.adds/koreader/defaults.lua file. It is much easier to make the changes using Notepad++, as the file includes plenty of comments describing the settings.
