After reading some detail about this issue, I noticed that Jim Butcher's "Skin Game" is on the "slate vote list" for Sad puppies.

I don't like the idea of this slate list voting thing, but I DO think it's unfortunate if Jim's book is somehow negatively affected due to it being on that list.
I quite liked "Skin game" and generally like the Dresden files series.

Still, I've never voted on the Hugo awards and never looked at what books were being nominated, so whatever happens won't affect my buying of books either way.

FWIW, it doesn't seem like they've broken any rules, but it does seem unsportsmanlike.

However reading about this issue HAS brought the Hugo awards to my attention and even the books that are nominated.
So actually this controversy has had the positive effect of getting me to consider the books that are nominated.
"The Goblin Emperor" looks like an interesting read.
