If you're sideloading from calibre there's no need to use kepubs at all if you don't want to. If you're buying from Kobo some books may be kepub only, but many (most???) give you the choice. Even if you did end up with a kepub you could still de-DRM it with Alf's tools and use calibre to turn it into a plain epub. No tech knowledge required.

The Kobo Patcher runs on Windows/Mac/Linux these days. See here for details of the latest version. Detailed help always available in the relevant thread.
