A do seem to have overcomplicated serving up one little application!
if I specifically google
kindle for windows 8, I get to an amazon page which tells me to get the app from windows store. Maybe only that store can install the app version ? or maybe it's cos I visited that page from my win 7 PC.
It is not something I've fully explored as I don't want it

Stupid eval version changed my Nvidia drivers again without asking yesterday, but at least I still have sound this time around
