Collections question

What exactly is the default Collections column supposed to be used for? For example, when would I apply a Collection to a bunch of books versus just another Tag? I've never really been too clear on this. How do you use Collections?

Are collections just a more personal version of tags? ie a Tag would be something like "Fiction" and a Collection would be "Favorite childhood books"? I was thinking of using Collections to keep some of the folder organization I have on my current e-books in case I want to reference how I divided up my books before processing into Calibre. I just wanted to see if that's a good use for the Collections column or if that is something I should use a new custom column for (like #fromfolder).
