Let me rephrase that... there is not and never has been any such thing as Kindle for Windows 7.

There is, and has always been, Kindle for PC -- it is a win32 application designed to run on Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc. etc., and of course it works on Windows 8 as well.


If you want to DeDRM your books, Kindle for PC will download the AZW3 (or legacy MOBI) files.
KIndle for Windows 8 is a metro app, and like apps in general, it stores info in appdata caches with no rhyme or reason. Those cannot be recovered, and there is no point in trying when Kindle for PC works perfectly anyway.
