I'm really disappointed in a batch of tumbled stones that were supposedly finished up this weekend - they are nice and smooth, but dull as dishwater. They didn't polish at all. Any ideas about what went wrong?
What stones were they? I know some can go dull (turquoise I think is one of them). I use my tumbler mostly for finishing silver though - brings a great shine to it!

AM: Where did you learn silversmithing? Tim is fixing to enter the forge soon, while I start taking faceting courses.
Um, from books and various forums etc on the web! I'm by no means proficient except for small jewellery stuff. We don't (yet) have a forge, so I'm just brazing/soldering stuff on the heat bricks (and obviously cutting, filing, shaping etc) - mind you, I've seen those used to good effect with steel!
