Wow. Look what I missed because of the ice storm. It's tragic! It's terrible! It's terribly dramatic!

(Anyone want to clue me in as to what happened to DixieGal? Not that I'm criticizing-- never!)

Anyhoo, for those who don't know, we got socked with an ice storm last Thursday night that left 300,000 customers without power in tiny NH alone (including us, of course). Presumably the two trees lying across our road, powerlines etc pinned neatly underneath, had something to do with that. Or maybe the utility pole at the end of the road, snapped in two places and dangling cables precariously over the intersection, had something to do with it. It's a good thing we have a wood stove with a cooking surface. Now we just need a hand pump for the well. I have discovered that I prefer blizzards to ice storms because it's easier to get water for drinking and washing afterward.

I'm back at work today (the campus has power, even if my house still doesn't, and the university has kindly opened the shower facilities of its gymnasium to local residents) but trying frantically to catch up with the paper I was supposed to write over the weekend, so it'll still be a few days before I can participate much in MR (or anything else fun). But I wanted to wave "hi" to everyone, at least.

Now, I really need to go make a pot of tea.
