The use case is obvious. You no longer need to sync your books and annotations between different apps/devices/reading platforms. You no longer have to rely on different implementations of e-books readers with differing sets of features and no interoperability.
IMO the target audience for this is far larger than the group of people that read long form text on desktop/laptop screens.
