In fact, the closest I've ever heard about authors buying copies of their books is when Sharon Miller and Steven Lee went cross-country to recover their books when Meisha Merlin went out of business, and a discussion with Bruce Bethke where his coauthor Vox Day bought all of the excess copies of Rebel Moon rather than allow it to be remaindered, and when Day's parents got divorced, they called Bethke and asked him to take the copies in their basement because Day was living in Italy at the time.

Maybe it would be closer to the truth to say that they are a
modified type of
self publisher, then, and not something truly different from both traditional publishers and self publishers?
