@hikerguy - if you're able to save the document in Word as DOCX (2007+) then I would recommend you bring that into calibre rather Filtered HTML. If you add it to the library you could convert to EPUB or you could import it into an empty EPUB via the calibre book editor.

Whilst DOCX is only one position higher in that list, my experience is that the difference is significant. FWIW : I convert ~12 DOCX a day, when Kovid implemented DOCX support my average EPUB editing work load fell from ~2 hours a day to 15 minutes a day; I was previously saving Filtered HTML in Word.

Save to disk is probably obeying whatever is set in Preferences->Save to disk->Formats to save list, if all you have is AZW3 then that's the only choice you'll be offered
