OK, I get that one has to be careful about multi-user. This is really only an issue if we decide to try to use the same catalog. It clearly would be safer to just make a copy of the catalog and work from that, but, then, of course, we would have the problem of merging updates. It may not be difficult to manage, though, since I only access infrequently, and my use is mostly limited to loading new Kindle books and converting them to ePub for her use on the Nook. Whereas, she does a lot more work on extra columns and the like.
The server thing sounds very iffy to me. We are sometimes gone for a week or two and one doesn't really want to have the Windows box waking up all the time. We could put the catalog on a Linux server which manages our mail ... except I am trying to get rid of that and I'm not sure how we would handle updates.
Calibre Companion isn't really an option right now as she has just purchased a Windows tablet for this purpose, unless she decides to return it.
What would be nice is to set the library to be normally read-only and then switch on read access only to do the sync after some updates.
