I've downloaded some .lit files but i can't display the right cover in the reader.

I added a cover image manually by dragging and drpping it onto the 'readerswork' image being displayed on the rhs of the calibre window and the new cover displays here ok.

when i open the book to read it, the reader shows a default 'readersworks' graphic. If i scroll down there is a cover image of the book but not the one i added manually.

I tried adding the cover by editing the metadata individually and browsing to my image. This window already displays my own cover but didn't change what is displayed in the reader.

So, how do i get rid of the 'readers works" graphic and how do i get my own cover displayed?

In all I have about 100 .lit files so i'd like a bulk solution if its possibe. I tried to auto-add metadata and covers but calibre said it couldn't find them. I'm not that surprised because they are old and out of print.
