I had no problem with her or any of the book's other characters anthropomorphizing animals. It was the way they saw them, and the way they interpreted their motivations. It was probably projection to a large degree and may have been completely off as far as the true motivation of the animals, but it gave insight into the thought processes of the people making the assumptions.
