I really enjoyed (combination of Kindle & audiobook) the first in the series, and just started on the second. The setting is St Mary's Historical Institute, where historians go back in time to witness important historical events. There's quite a high level of danger (they often come back wounded, sometimes dead), but the tone of the first book is light-hearted, with plenty of humour.

It appears to be set in the future (there's mention of things like data cubes), but it's never specified exactly when, and the technology isn't very important to the story.
