I have not rooted my device yet and have been installing apps through the Good eReader E-Ink App Store app! There are lots of alternatives to Google Play out there like this...

But I'm gonna root it sooner or later to add new software features to it and I'd probably load Google Play on it to install some rare apps that may not be found on alternative stores.

Overall it's a good and powerful device and I've been happy with it.
