Rise by Toronto-resident author Amanda Sun (
ISFDB) is a tie-in novella to her Paper Gods series of YA paranormal contemporary urban fantasy adventure novels with romantic elements set in modern-day Japan, starring two young persons drawn into a conflict with Japanese mythological creatures and discovering the obligatory hidden heritage and deadly secrets and destined tragedy which they must avert to save the world, etc. etc., free courtesy of publisher Harlequin's Teen imprint.
This is apparently being made free to promote the upcoming 3rd-in-series,
Storm, which is due out in July.
Currently free to pre-order (slated for June 1st) @
Amazon &
Google Play (both available to Canadians). Will no doubt show up in all the other usual venues when the time comes.
ETA: Now also free @
B&N,
Kobo &
iTunes (both available to Canadians), and directly from the
publisher's webstore (ADE-DRM ePub available worldwide).
And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.
Because that thing I keep saying about how I have this inordinate fondness for cultures that produce dragon boats (and by extension, cultures that heavily borrow from them), still holds true.
Also, greater diversity in characters and story settings, contrasting cultural exchange, sfnal storyline, fellow Canadian author, yadda yadda bonus points. The usual sort of stuff that hits my reading kinks.
Enjoy!
Description (no synopsis as yet, so I'll just crib the one from the 2nd novel to give you a taste of what the series is like after the initial Meet Cute Then Things Asplode setup)
Amanda Sun weaves together two tales of love, ink and magic in this companion novella to the Paper Gods series!
A long, long time ago, before the world was as we know it, Izanami and Izanagi came into being. Two of the first of the ancient gods of Japan, they crafted the world from ink and their own imaginations. Izanagi wants, more than anything, to be with Izanami—but one moment of pride could tear them apart forever.
Yuki and Tanaka have been friends for as long as they can remember, but lately deeper feelings have been bubbling beneath the surface. How do they navigate the transition from friendship to true love without destroying the powerful bond between them?
Set a millennia apart, can these two couples, living parallel love stories, find their happily-ever-afters?
And don't miss the epic conclusion to Katie and Tomo's story in Storm, from Harlequin TEEN.
