It does accept 'hybrid' (mobi+kf8) files (i.e. anything kindlegen/kindle previewer generates, or calibre with the 'both' option). When delivered, it will be mobi or kf8, depending on what the target device/app supports (iOS app will get something sort of in between). Yes, these will take up more cloud storage, but IMO it is worth it to have richer formatting options of kf8 (in most cases).
