I've tried button combinations such as "page down" and the pressing down on the right-hand rocker, but no luck. Focus still stays at the top navigation bar...

Any suggestions?
Yup. Here's a workaround - might not be your favorite, but if you're stuck without a stylus, this'll work.

Navigate to the MAGNIFYING GLASS Search icon. The keyboard will pop up - start typing in the book you want to read. Then - when it starts to pop up, press the BACK button to make the keyboard disappear.

Then use the directional stick to head to the search field. It'll populate with the most recent search up there, ready to be selected. Click on it and it'll open the book.
