Some people are paranoid Amazon is spying on them, and don't want to connect to Amazon's servers. Other people see no need for an Amazon account when they don't buy books there. Personally I don't understand either opinion
but there are always workarounds.

Correct -- you wouldn't even be able to add and delete books from existing collections.
