Auto updates are not good. I don't know how many times I've seen at xda when a new version of a phone OS comes out and the flash happy people flash it and then brick their phone by trying to downgrade. That means when non flash happy people are automatically updated, they can't downgrade. You can't say that auto updates are good when it's common to prevent people from downgrading.
I also remember back in the old days when I had a Garmin gps it would start an upgrade while you were using it to navigate. You couldn't stop the update which meant you also couldn't use it to navigate.
