The trend for publishers is to price backlist higher than current titles, and I suspect that it's simply to drive profit for what will be a lower volume title.

As far as conversion costs, these are minimal in the grand scheme of things. Even if you did not have the original source - and I suspect most still do - going from a scanned print book to a well edited eBook is fairly trivial.
