If I could figure out what programs on installed on the Acer you recommended earlier it would help my decision. I have searched Newegg and Acer's website but I can't find it anywhere. I even looked at it on Amazon and what is installed is not listed. If I was in Texas I would go to Fry's and test out some laptops. Sadly I live in such a rural area there is nothing but Wal-mart and I do not shop at that store.
Sorry, I did mean Acer. The one I recommended is a very good laptop. One to last you quite a while before you'll need something new.

Usually the usual junk is installed such as some antivurus demo like Norton. These things are easy to remove. It does come with Windows 8.1 and you can install Classic Start Menu to make it look and feel like Windows 7 if you want a full desktop with a proper start menu. So that's no problem.

Calibre 64-bit and Sigil all work very well under Windows 8.1. So does ADE and Kindle (Desktop/Windows 7 version). So really, there's no need to avoid Windows 8.1. And the Acer will be strong enough to let you plug in a high resolution monitor. I prefer higher resolution than 1920x1080 for a stand along computer monitor.

This is the monitor I have. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-294-_-Product It has a resolution of 2560x1440.
