I've found "month-day" works well as long as the year isn't included. I use the format (with "14 January" written as "01.14") on my checking account spreadsheet where I use a separate one for each year.
When writing the entire date I prefer the military format (day - three letter month - four digit year) because it is unambiguous. As an example, "2/1/7" can be read as any of the following:
- First of February in 2007
- Second of January in 2007
- Seventh of January 2002.
But "2 Jan 2007" can only be read one way.
New trivia item: The Incredible Hulk was originally colored grey, but was changed to green due to the difficulty in printing grey consistently.
