I don't think making changes to your account is the actual (or maybe I should say only) trigger for being updated to the "New" encryption method. I think it just happens now. Like a staggered rollout of a software update.

I've done absolutely nothing to my B&N account in months. Everything worked fine (old encryption key) at that time. Yesterday I re-downloaded one of my previous purchases and—bam!—the lock had been changed.

I'd already decided a while back not to buy from them any more; I just wanted to see if the old way still worked for me. It doesn't.
