Firstly, as PeterT said, convert your MOBI's to ePub. While reading MOBI's on the Kobo firmware works, it is much more likely you will have problems than with epubs. Simple MOBI's will be OK, but larger more complex won't. As a simple test, I put four MOBI's on my Aura H2O last night. The first one I tried opened, but when I turned the page, it closed and marked the book as finished. The others opened and paged OK. I have seen this happen with MOBI's before. I have no idea what is wrong with it, but converting to ePub gives me a readable book.
As it works for a known good epub, the 1% read problem indicates something wrong with the ePubs you are using. I have seen it somewhere in the past, but I don't remember what the problem was. Doing an ePub-to-ePub conversion in calibre will probably fix it. I suspect if you edit it in the calibre editor or Sigil, you will find a lot of errors. Or some very strange formatting,
If the conversion doesn't fix it, then we'd need to see the books. That lets someone else test them and see if they have the same problem. Then we can look at them to try and work out what the problem with them is.
