But if you find out that it drains your watch battery flat in a few hours, it's not likely that it's something you're going to carry on doing.

I see no reason for your claim that Apple are "lying". They say that it lasts 18h, and they tell you the conditions in which that is the case, just as Amazon tell you that the Kindle battery charge will last 2 months, if you read for half an hour a day. I recharge my Kindle about once every three weeks, because I read rather more than Amazon's assumption, but it doesn't invalidate the stated claim.
