It means when you are sending to device and there are no formats available that the device supports, calibre wlll autoconvert from the best available input format to the format that the device prefers abve all others.

Example: you have a PDF and MOBI, and are sending to a device that only accepts EPUB. MOBI is a better input than PDF, so MOBI gets converted. The device wants EPUB, so it is converted to EPUB.
Now an available format can be sent (all formats are retained in calibre) so EPUB is sent to the device.

If the device accepted EPUB but would settle for PDF in a pinch, the PDF is sent as-is.
This requires that both EPUB and PDF are checked in the device driver.


calibre will never automatically delete a format!
