@joliva979 - one way would be to convert it to an EPUB and use the calibre editor and then convert the EPUB to MOBI.

If you have Word 2007 or later, then try saving the document as DOCX and convert that. DOCX ranks higher than HTML in Kovid Goyal's league table of best formats to convert ==>> What are the best source formats to convert?. And if that doesn't work instantly, import the DOCX into the book editor, edit and save as EPUB and convert that.
