It can absolutely be displayed at original size. Click on the image and it pops up, same dimensions as the size limit. Right-click to open or click the quoted link and you see the whole thing.
I am unsure what you actually want, besides full size images inline.
It seems to me that attachments (with or without thumbnails) fulfill every necessary criteria as closely as the rules allow.
