If you get a relatively recent-model Kindle, you will be able to make use of the KF8 (azw3) format. Depending on the conversion settings chosen (and how the original EPUB was constructed), EPUB to KF8 should be fairly lossless as far as formatting is concerned.

EPUB is the preferred source for generating Kindlebooks these days, afterall.
