If you are just planning to load free books or books you already have on an ereader you don't really need an internet connection. I have a Kobo Touch which is about 3 years old; you have to register with them but I have never bought a book from them. You can load books from your computer. I also have an Aluratek which is quite cheap, but I am not sure if they even make them anymore.

For reading comics you are probably better off with a tablet. Of course you can read E books on a tablet too, but eInk is better for reading text I think.
