I'd say get a tablet, a folding stand and a screen protector!
Normally cookbooks or crafts books look nicer in colour and you can use the Amazon Kindle application on most tablets.
While I absolutely love my eInk Kindles, when I want to look at cookbooks or photography books, my iPad always wins. The Kindle versions of those even include nice colour pictures that are wonderful on the Kindle app.
Main difference, of course, will be battery time, but if you recharge daily, that should not be much of an issue.
PS, and no, a Kindle is *not* sturdy.
Drop it once (not much of an issue for most tablets), the fragile eInk might very well scatter.
I broke my first Kindle 3 weeks after having bought it simply by putting it into the bag together with my iPad and phone. I always cringe when I see one of the Amazon ads where someone puts their Kindle without any kind of cover into the backpacket of their jeans. Recipe for disaster IMO.
