Amazon replaced my first Kindle Keyboard free of charge when I broke the display.
I have another Amazon Kindle Keyboard I bought later that does not start up anymore.
Possibly I should try "debricking" it but as I have in the meantime a lot of other readers, including some now unused "basic" Kindles as they were so far mostly upgraded to PW II for most of my family members, it is not really a huge priority for me.
So, most of my readers were not rendered obsolete by defect, but rather by the emergence of better new models.
