GET A COVER! Can be any kind of cover, as long as it is sturdy.
This is what I would emphasize, being one (of the many) who managed to break their brand-new e-reader by doing something that would be absolutely fine with any other electronic device, e.g. tablet, phone, gameboy etc.
In my case it was simply putting the reader (Kindle Keyboard) into my bag together with tablet and phone, while in a protective sleeve ... that was unfortunately not tough enough. I did not throw, drop, maul, mutilate or anyhow other mistreat my bag, but when I took out the Kindle half an hour later, the screen was cracked (most likely it got slightly bent) and it was thus unusable.
I must here, however, commend Amazon for sending me a new one free of charge, as this happens often with e-readers and Amazon (and most likely also B&N) want you to keep buying their content, so they normally are quite nice even though you might have broken the reader yourself. (But of course ... better do not break it in the first place)
Best regards,
Andy
