I have to agree with Meera. You have to decide if you want to read novels or comics because ereaders simply don't do comics well. On the plus side, you don't have to register your device. It will ask you the first time to hook up to wifi. Just click cancel, turn the wifi off and you are good to go with sideloading.
I have a kindle keyboard whose wifi causes failure. I reset to factory settings and turned of the wifi and have been using it without a problem since. I hear you can do the same thing with a Kindle Fire HDX, but a lot of function is limited. Perhaps your best bet is to get a Samsung - not ideal for reading like an ereader, but you can read from it and do comics too.
