Spartacus by Howard Fast. A remarkable book. Fast wrote it after being imprisoned during the Mccarthy Witchunts. He refused to reveal the names of people who had helped raise funds to feed refugees from the Franco dictatorship who were stuck in the mountains while fleeing to France.
The book has little resemblance to the film. It takes place after Spartacus and his army are defeated. A truly remarkable tale of oppression and the human spirit. Some of the finest prose I've read. It's an unsung American classic.
